The 22nd annual International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2011) is focused on innovative techniques and tools for assessing, predicting, and improving the reliability, safety, and security of software products. ISSRE also emphasizes industrial relevance and rigorous empirical studies. ISSRE is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and the IEEE Reliability Society. It has grown to become the leading conference in the area and one of the few that attracts the technical leadership from both Academia and Industry. In the tradition of ISSRE, we have had an almost even split (50-50) between Academia and Industry - a rare achievement for any conference. ISSRE focuses on the theory and practice of software systems reliability engineering. Research papers are extensively reviewed by a large program committee and the selected papers are coveted. An Industrial committee separately reviews papers for the Industry track looking for relevance and applicability.

issre2011

ISSRE has some of the best Industry case studies reported. ISSRE Workshops have picked up considerable momentum. In average we have had over 100 participants in several workshops. Some of the workshops are becoming regulars - in that those communities

meet year after year at ISSRE (Embedded Systems Reliability, and Software Rejuvenation). We hope to build these communities and seed new ones that are vital to current interests in Research and Industry.

Welcome to Hiroshima, Japan for ISSRE 2011.
ISSRE 2011 will be moved from Tokyo to Hiroshima, Japan.

April 24, 2011 Update:

ISSRE 2011 will be moved from Tokyo to Hiroshima, Japan and be held during November 29 - December 2, 2011. Hiroshima is 400 miles west of Tokyo, and over 500 miles away from the Fukushima Daichii plant. Most business meetings scheduled in this western part of Japan are proceeding as normal.

In the past few weeks as the Fukushima Daichii nuclear situation developed following the tsunami, the Japan ISSRE team and the Steering Committee developed a few options to relocate ISSRE 2011 which was scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan. Although November is far away, and we trust travel would return to normal by then, many authors are faced with making decisions now, since we are approaching the paper submission deadlines. Understandably, there is concern, and often, our loved ones can be more concerned than we are.

Two alternative locations in Japan were being explored, one being Hiroshima. At the same time we also explored two locations in the US. To gain a better understanding of what you, the software reliability community feels, we conducted a survey. We got more than 250 responses, with many detailed write-ins. In summary, we learned:

  1. The community is very supportive of the people in Japan and our heart goes out to those affected by the tsunami and the nuclear accident.
  2. Many are concerned about traveling to Tokyo given its proximity to the Fukushima Diaachi area, and this deters them from submitting to ISSRE.
  3. On the other hand, should the conference be moved to Hiroshima, Japan, a majority of those planning to submit papers will do so, significantly changing the equation.
  4. The Japan ISSRE organization team, while developing the Hiroshima alternative, told us that they were open to the possibility of shifting it to the US, should that be the right choice for ISSRE. We greatly appreciate their objectivity and integrity with their stance and support of ISSRE.
  5. There would be a marginal increase in submissions if we relocated 2011 to the US. While only a part of this can be attributed towards fears of travel, funding and international travel also factor into this equation. However, the increase in logistics and risks created due to a major location shift and change of team has a corresponding negative impact.

All things considered, the steering committee of ISSRE, in conjunction with the general chair, Prof. Tadashi Dohi, and his organizing team in Japan concluded that moving the conference to Hiroshima would be the best choice for ISSRE 2011.

We are very grateful to several people who have helped us in creating options given the situation, evaluating the options and preparing for them. And to you, the Software Reliability Engineering Committee - for having meticulously answered our survey questions and provided many detailed write-in comments to tell us how you feel, and give us advice.

We will make a few minor shifts in the dates for the call for papers. We will move the research submission date to May 30, but appreciate earlier submissions given the tighter schedules. We also request the program committee members and external reviewers that this year, the review cycle will need to be faster due to these shifts, and we will appreciate your help in getting them done sooner.

Finally, we encourage all of you to submit papers and make plans to attend ISSRE 2011. Going to ISSRE 2011 in Hiroshima will demonstrate our support to the people of Japan, as many of you have commented in your written survey feedback. We look forward to your participation and want to see you in Hiroshima, Japan this November/December.

Steering Committee, ISSRE

April 13, 2011 Update:

We thank you for taking the survey requested a few days ago. We have received close to 250 responses, with several written comments. We are elated by the outpouring of concern in the written comments and straight feedback... and we know that this community really cares.  The General Chair, the organizing team in Japan, and the Steering Committee have spent several days discussing our options. There are no easy choices, but we will make a decision within the next week. We encourage you to work on your papers and have them ready.  We will likely push the deadline out by a few weeks, but regardless we will conduct ISSRE 2011 and we want to see you there.

April 4, 2011

The Organizing Committee of ISSRE 2011 and the Steering Committee of ISSRE are deeply saddened by the loss of life and tragedy affecting people in Japan. Given the challenges faced at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, we recognize that you may have concerns since ISSRE 2011 is located in Tokyo. While November is still far away, we recognize that many may have concerns.  To better understand your concerns and help us make good decisions we invite you to take a short survey, and give us your input.
